Final Major Project - Moving Image

I'm using my blog page as a platform to showcase my development in animation, and exploration with various animating techniques. I will also upload some of my initial ideas, sketches and illustrations concerning my project.

Moving Image

For my final major project I have decided to study “Moving Image”. I will explore various approaches to traditional and digital animation, which will enable me to better understand the principle behind the mechanics of animation as a whole. As a result, I hope to produce a series of moving images in various forms and media, before deciding on the technique I’ll use for my final outcome. I will focus on character animation, which relates directly to my prior projects, which are heavily character based. The context of the final animation will be based on a passage from a book. I will also produce initial conceptual illustrations portraying various characters and environments in the book. For my final outcome, I will create a series of storyboards based on various passages, and then choose the sequence I’d like to animate. The final product will reflect the various forms of animation I have explored, and how the advantages and disadvantages of the animation technique influenced my method and artistic style in comparison to the original illustrations. An aspect that also intrigues me is the use of anaglyph image in 2-D animation, which I will briefly explore before directly involving it in the project.

I will draw influence from traditional and modern animation methods – such as those in motion pictures and 2D animated features. Studies from life drawing will also be necessary – for example, I’ll illustrate a friend posing in order to adapt their figure to that of the characters’. I will explore some of the history of animation by attending the National Media Museum in Bradford. I will also investigate individual animators and illustrators, as well as the commercial companies, such as Disney and Ghibli.

I will explore and deploy a range of techniques, including those from very early stages of animation, such as; the Zoetrope, the Phenakistoscope, stop- motion, the Zoopraxiscope and Rotoscoping, as well as the traditional “Flip-book” effect. I would have to construct some of the animation devices myself, and use equipment such as a strobe light, light box and rotating disk in order for some of the techniques to function. I will use software such as Adobe Image Ready CS to digitalise and frame my animations. A projector or screen will also be necessary to display the moving images. I will investigate the more basic forms of animation before developing my ideas and expanding my methods to more complex techniques. In order to do so, I will have to assess various materials and techniques, allowing myself to observe which approaches are most suitable.

I will analyse my work through the effectiveness of the techniques I use; does the animation depict movement effectively? Is the movement fluid? How could I have improved the outcome in other circumstances? I will also compare all the animation techniques that I used and assess their overall strengths and weaknesses. I will get outside opinions through tutor ad Peer group reviews, as well as possible advice and new ideas.
